Artist Statement

styles to create visually compelling images. I am preoccupied with
uncovering the reality that lies beneath the surface- the agony
beneath the beauty. My works reflect my ever changing
obsessions, and are influenced by my personal experiences
growing up as an Asian female in Canada. I am currently
concerned with issues of cultural identity, and our relationship with
the environment and each other- uncertainties that exist in our world.

My artistic practice is based in oil painting and is motivated by my
interest in human experience and behaviour. Inspired by the
medium, I strive to get to the heart of paint using the medium to
capture vibrancy through texture, richness of colour and illusion of
light. Following the trend of contemporary artists Joanne Tod and
Peter Doig, I appropriate images directly from mass media and
historical paintings to present themes that are relevant today. I
invent characters to perform distilled tableaux on themes ranging
from cultural identity, power, sexuality, and relationships. Over the
past number of years I have worked in thematic series, beginning
each with a conceptual framework and then allowing the layered
painting processes to determine the eventual form and content of
the work.
